Residents of Adelaide and surrounding areas should prepare for a wet Wednesday with the Bureau of Meteorology reporting an 80% chance of showers, predominantly in the morning and early afternoon. The expected rainfall could range from 1 to 8 millimetres, accompanied by strong winds, prompting warnings for residents, especially along coastal areas. A high temperature of 23 is expected.
Today, the west to northwesterly winds will increase significantly, reaching speeds of 20 to 30 km/h and escalating further to 30 to 45 km/h. By the afternoon, these will turn west to southwesterly at 25 to 35 km/h. The strong winds have triggered a strong wind warning for multiple areas including the Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, Upper West Coast, and Central Coast, among others. There has been a cancellation of the warning for the Far West Coast.
Looking ahead to Thursday, the weather is expected to remain unsettled, though less severe than Wednesday with a low of 14 degrees and a max of 22 expected. A possible morning and early afternoon shower is on the forecast with a 40% probability. Rainfall is likely to be minimal, ranging from 0 to 1 mm. Winds on Thursday will follow a southwesterly direction at 20 to 30 km/h before easing in the evening to 15 to 20 km/h as they shift southerly.
Friday promises a slight reprieve with a similar pattern expected, and a high of 24 degrees. A 40% chance of a morning shower is projected, with mostly sunny conditions anticipated by the afternoon. Wind conditions will remain moderate, switching from light winds early in the day to southwesterly winds of 15 to 25 km/h and tapering off in the evening.
Strong wind warnings continue into Thursday for the South Central Coast, Upper South East Coast, and Lower South East Coast, further highlighting the need for vigilance among residents and mariners in these regions.
The weather situation stems from a trough over eastern South Australia that extends to a low south of Kangaroo Island. Forecasters note that the trough will shift eastward over the eastern states by Wednesday afternoon. Following this, a high pressure system will position itself over southern waters, bringing a ridge that will extend across the state through the weekend.
Isolated showers are also expected over the southern agricultural area, more frequent near windward coasts and ranges. While maximum temperatures in the southeast are projected to remain near average, the northern and western regions will experience temperatures well below average.
