Oh my Paul, you sublime maestro!
“Once Upon A Dream” the theme of Paolo Sebastian’s 2018 Spring/Summer collection was an absolute adventure into a world of fairy tale and a 1950s whimsical dreamland.
From the very get go we were transported into this story teller’s world of romance and sweet love and a feeling of boundless possibilities. The stage was set with the romance of spring, the audience was enveloped into a floral wonderland with grass underfoot and speckled light filtering through – a forest of catwalk dreams.
Paul Vasileff and his Couture team took us into a historical sensory explosion of a 1950s Doris Day world and the soundtrack took us to operatic heights of violins and Snow White’s voice.
Dreamy chiffon and tulle glided down the runway with exquisite creations in soft pastel hues. Steering away from his use of lacework and figure hugging gowns, Vasileff has leaned towards the the tapered waist and full skirt, layers and layers of dreamy chiffon and billowing capes and sleeves the glided in the wake.
But it gets better, each gown, as if touch by magic, glittering with thoughtful embroidery and beadwork. Nightingales played upon dresses carrying carefully placed ribbons, embroidered phrases of love and hand sewn Bambis played on hemlines. Dresses were sensually done up with delicate fabric covered buttons that were reminiscent of Grace Kelly’s wedding dress. Stars glittered in the soft light as if a fireworks display had gently fallen on gowns, like a fairytale dream display of gowns fit for a Cinderella maiden.
This show wrapping up the Adelaide Fashion Festival 2017 was a perfect finale. To Paolo Sebastian and your team of merry hand maidens, thank you for transporting us back to a time where belief in fairy tales and magic and wonder reigned supreme.
