Africola Canteen, the hotly anticipated new eatery from the kitchen of Australia’s most exciting restaurant, will open in late July.
Africola’s new venture will showcase the super fresh and veg-forward flavours of Duncan Welgemoed’s acclaimed Adelaide restaurant in a casual setting on The Parade in Norwood.
Open seven days a week, Africola Canteen is Africola’s breezy inner-suburb sibling with a menu featuring a revolving list of Africola’s greatest hits and future classics from Head Chef Joel Tisato, Development Chef Imogen Czulowski and Owner, Chef Duncan Welgemoed.

Duncan says: “People have been asking us to open a second restaurant for ages, so you can stop now, ‘cause that day is almost here. This is the everyday Africola experience; think of Africola Canteen as Iggy Pop to Africola’s The Stooges, it’s as fun and delicious as the original but with a few twists to make it a place that stands on its own.”
Africola Canteen is all about convenience as customers can take a seat in the new space or grab some salads with secret recipe roasts to take home for weeknight dinners or backyard BBQs with friends.
Dishes like the Whole Cauliflower with Turmeric Butter and Tahini, as well as Green Goddess Chicken (a new Welgemoed signature dish) will feature alongside a rotating selection of salads from a list of more than 50.
The food style will be vegetable and plant focused with plenty of grains and good fats and some laser sharp meat cookery, of course.
Imogen says “We won’t be shy with the garlic, chilli and acid.”
Joel says “Africola Canteen is a chance for customers to drop in and quickly grab their Africola favourites to take home or enjoy with mates on the Parade. The menu leans into what makes the original restaurant so great – it caters for all dietary and lifestyle requirements – but unlike the original restaurant you don’t have to book weeks in advance.”
Open from 10.30am to 7pm every day, Africola Canteen will feature Australia’s best non-alcoholic drinks list with a range of shrubs, organic sodas and kombuchas on offer, while Africola’s famous condiments (including the Mpumalanga Fire Sauce) will finally be available to purchase.
Meanwhile back at Africola, Head Chef Lauren Southwell, Sous Chef Jasna Whiting and Development Chef Imogen Czsulowski will be turning up the volume and continuing to deliver some of the very best food in the state.
