It’s no secret that times are getting tougher for small businesses, and after a quarter of a century serving the community, one local store is calling for help.
Located on Grange Road in Flinders Park, the Starlight Party Superstore has been a go-to for party throwers since the early 2000s. For 25 years, it’s been the kind of place you’d pop into for one thing and walk out with armfuls of everything from Santa hats and stockings to gender reveal balloons and table confetti. But like so many independent businesses in a post-COVID world, things have changed.
“We started 25 years ago as a Christmas shop, and were very popular back in the day,” shared owner Heidi.
“Over the years, we slowly started to turn it more into a party shop, but it has been getting really hard, especially with the Christmas stock. Ever since everything started going online, it’s only gotten harder.”
Over time, the shop naturally evolved to meet demand, expanding into party supplies for every kind of milestone. But while the need for celebrations hasn’t disappeared, foot traffic has.
“We downsized the shop a few years ago, but after 25 years, we’ve put so much effort into keeping it alive.
“We love what we do. We’re here to help people have the best parties they can. We try to keep our prices low and accommodate people where we can, but with rent and bills going up, it’s been a challenge.”
Heidi shares that after so long in business, and having her whole family involved, the thought of shutting the shop is heartbreaking. But helping people throw celebrations and making them the best they can is the highlight of the job. They have everything for events such as baby showers, hen’s nights, gender reveals, birthdays, engagements, weddings, graduations and more. They stock balloons of all shapes and sizes and also create balloon garlands, personalised balloons, and helium balloons.
