RSPCA South Australia is making a heartfelt appeal to find a forever home for Mia, a three-year-old mixed breed dog who has become the longest-staying resident in the organisation’s history. Having spent a record-breaking 19 months in care, Mia’s happy ending is yet to come.
Mia’s extended stay at RSPCA SA, spanning almost 600 days, is not for lack of charm or lovability. According to Sam Margrave, the overseer of RSPCA SA’s foster care program, Mia’s prolonged search for a permanent home is attributed to a series of unfortunate circumstances rather than any fault of her own. “Mia came to us in June 2022 and has been available to adopt since mid-July 2022,” Sam explained. Despite being adopted three times, Mia was returned each time due to reasons beyond her control, including size concerns and personal issues faced by her adopters.
Currently under the care of Rhapsody Auckett, one of RSPCA SA’s most experienced foster carers, Mia has shown remarkable progress. From a fearful and timid dog, she has blossomed into an affectionate and responsive companion, capable of living peacefully with cats and potentially fitting well into a family with older children. However, Mia’s journey has not been without its challenges. Early in her life, she was subjected to alleged abuse, which contributed to her initial fearfulness. Despite these hurdles, Mia’s transformation has been nothing short of miraculous, showcasing her ability to trust and love again.
Recognizing the unique challenges in finding Mia a suitable home, RSPCA SA has identified certain roadblocks, including her preference to be the only dog in the household and her need for ongoing medication to manage a skin condition and anxiety. In an effort to ease the financial burden for potential adopters, RSPCA SA has secured generous donations to cover the cost of Mia’s medication for the first year.
To further support Mia’s transition to a new home, RSPCA SA offers a comprehensive support package, including a one-on-one consultation with their Dog Training Team and ongoing support from the Animal Behaviour Team. This commitment underscores the organization’s dedication to ensuring Mia’s successful integration into her forever home.
Sam Margrave passionately expressed the collective hope of RSPCA SA staff and volunteers, stating, “The ideal home for Mia is one where someone is home more often than not, with people who recognize that she is an amazing survivor with so much love to give, and who want to be part of her healing journey.
