The State Government is partnering with the Port Adelaide Football Club to transform Alberton Oval with a $35 million redevelopment.

The State Government is partnering with the Port Adelaide Football Club to transform Alberton Oval with a $35 million redevelopment, investing $17 million over four years to fund Stage 4 of the upgrade, which includes modern facilities for the AFLW team and improvements to bring the oval up to AFL match day standards.

The next stage of the redevelopment will include a new third grandstand inspired by the oval’s heritage, which will increase the seating capacity to 6,000 and the overall capacity to over 10,000. This expansion will cater for AFLW, SANFL, SANFLW, and AFL pre-season games.

There will also be new facilities for the AFLW players will be included, such as dedicated changerooms and coaching administration spaces. High-performance athlete wellness and recovery facilities will also be built, which will be available for community use.

A STEM learning centre will be established on-site, alongside education and conference spaces designed for community programs and the Port Adelaide Academy of Sport. A new facility for the Port Adelaide Bowling Club will also be part of the redevelopment, including a synthetic green and new clubrooms. The project will also include a flexible learning and event space that will be accessible to both the club and the local community.

The redevelopment is designed to provide world-class AFL and AFLW playing and training facilities for Port Adelaide, while also creating multi-use spaces for the local community. These spaces will offer opportunities for junior basketball, junior soccer, lawn bowls, and a range of community events. The redevelopment also emphasises passive recreation and community gathering, creating a shared space for the people of the western suburbs.

“Providing world-class facilities for our AFL and AFLW players and staff plays a key role in ensuring our club is highly competitive on-field by retaining and attracting the best talent,” Matthew Richardson, Port Adelaide Football Club CEO, said.

“AFL football not only plays an important role in inspiring young people to play sport and live healthy lifestyles, but it is also a major economic generator in South Australia.

“This is particularly important for the club’s popular AFLW home games where Alberton Oval had the second highest attendances in the competition in 2024.”

The redevelopment will also improve the match day experience for fans with new terraced seating around the eastern boundary and upgraded amenities. The project is set to strengthen the club’s position as a leader in Australian sport while fostering a more inclusive and community-focused atmosphere at Alberton Oval.
