Alcohol Purchase Restrictions Have Been Lifted

Retail Drinks Australia announced the news today after previously placing buying limits on the sale of alcohol at major retailers across the country.

Purchase restrictions on alcohol during the COVID-19 crisis have been lifted in Australia as of today.

Retail Drinks Australia announced the news, after previously placing buying limits on the sale of alcohol at major retailers across the country.

Put into place on March 31, the restrictions meant shoppers were limited to two slabs of beer or cider and 12 bottles of wine per transaction.

Cask wine was also affected, with shoppers were only able to purchase two casks of wine under 10 litres.

Retail Drinks CEO Julie Ryan says the temporary restrictions have been effective in alleviating concerns regarding potential panic-buying of alcohol.

“The specific purpose of the restrictions was to demonstrate coordinated industry leadership by liquor retailers, and to pre-emptively address concerns regarding panic-buying” she says.

“After monitoring data closely over the last month, we can report that despite early elevated purchasing following initial announcements of COVID-19 related restrictions, we have seen purchasing trends flatten and return to near-normal.”

More to come.
