Multi-award winning guitarist, Aleksandr Tsiboulski, joined forces with popular Soprano, Jane Edwards, to present a wonderful concert of music spanning four centuries. Tsiboulski has earned an enviable reputation in Adelaide, not only as a superb soloist and chamber musician, but also as a sensitive and skilled accompanist, and it is in that role we found him for this concert. Edwards is known for her exploration of the early music repertoire and Tsiboulski has been active in contemporary music, so this made for an interesting pairing and choice of songs.

Not only do they traverse four centuries but the music was written by composers from Spain, England, Italy and America, representing a wide range of sounds and influences. This was, indeed, a concert filled with variety, and the close interaction and well-considered balance of these two fine artists made this an exciting and richly rewarding afternoon.

Tsiboulski had an opportunity to show his virtuosity, too, soloing on Fernando Sor’s very popular piece, Introduction and Variations on a Theme by Mozart, Op. 9, based on the melody Das klinget so herrlich, das klinget so schön from Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute.

Edwards has a wonderful clarity to her voice and manages to capture the inner essence of the songs as well as giving a feeling of place and time, yet still maintains an individuality of expression and interpretation.

This was a most enjoyable concert presented by two extremely talented and skilled performers and deserves to be repeated for the benefit of those that could not get tickets.
