In just one day in Australia, over 31,500 adults and children fleeing domestic violence found refuge in a domestic violence emergency shelter or transitional housing program. Majority of these adults were women. In fact, Australian women are nearly three times more likely than men to experience violence from an intimate partner. One Australian organisation is making sure that these women are not forgotten about.
The Good Box, is a social enterprise that was created by female co-founders Gali Blacher and Madelyn Jones, their organisation works to provide essential items to people experiencing homelessness (which includes those in emergency shelter).
After hearing from these women that they ‘no longer feel like themselves’ and that they ‘lack dignity’, Gali and Maddy knew something had to be done so they created The YouBeauty Box.
The YouBeauty Box is designed for women who are already in emergency housing and have essentials but are in need of a reminder that they do MATTER! The Good Box hopes to lighten the weight of women experiencing homelessness due to Domestic Violence and remind them that they deserve respect as well as the opportunity to feel appreciated and beautiful.
Filled with a range of essential products from brands such as Modibodi, BIG W, Dented Diva, Endota Spa, Eat for You, Poni Cosmetics, Unilever and Kynd.
Advocates joining this campaign include well-known personality Gorgi Coghlan, Home and Away star Lisa Gormely, The Block’s Bianca Chatfield and MAFS star Kerry Knight.
“The Good Box is very proud of the YouBeauty box as we have seen the profound impact it has on women in need. Many women who experience domestic violence end up homeless in emergency accommodation and while they do have access to basic necessities, they have had a loss of dignity. The purpose of the box is to provide these women with beautiful self-care items such as a moisturizer, a face cleanser, lipstick, period proof underwear and beautiful earrings. These items remind these women that they MATTER and we care about them,” says The Good Box co-founder Gali Blacher.
“We have received many messages in the past from women who have escaped a domestic violent household and are now housed in emergency care and they thank us for helping them feel ‘human’ again. It’s amazing how something as small as a moisturizer or nicely smelling body wash can make someone feel whole again. Something else really special about the box is that a handwritten note is written in each box from the person who donated the box,” says The Good Box co-founder Maddy Jones.
Head to this link to donate a YouBeauty Box for $21.99, and they are then distributed through charities nationally including Adelaide’s Hutt Street Centre, Mission Australia, St John’s Crisis Centre, Uniting, Hobart City Mission and many more.
The boxes will be available from 10am on the 27th of October.
Other boxes are also available including a Goodie Box, Blokes Box, Gals Box and Pet Box.
