An SA pool just had a day for dogs and it was just as epic as you can imagine

Mount Barker Mountain Pool marked the end of its 70-year run with a heartwarming dog-friendly splash day, as locals and their pups celebrated before the site makes way for the new Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

The Mount Barker Mountain Pool just hosted the ultimate pool doggy day, and it’s the cutest thing we’ve ever seen!

On Saturday, April 5th, to mark the end of the pool’s 70-year lifetime, the community brought together their fluffy friends and fur babies for a day in the sunshine. 65 dogs of all shapes and sizes headed down to the pool and had it all to themselves before the facility was officially decommissioned in preparation for the opening of the new Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre later this year.

“We were inspired to deliver the doggy pool day by our desire to engage with the community and drive a paw-some activity to celebrate our local four-legged friends,” shared the Mount Barker Mountain Pool team.

“Community turnout was incredibly enthusiastic, with our furry friends showing up in force – 65 dogs wagged and splashed their way into the entire team’s hearts, and the lifeguards were kept busy giving out pats.

“This is the first time anyone has treated the local pups to a spa day in Mount Barker, though we have run family days that have only had paws-itive responses.”

The dogs spent the day in the outdoor pool, which has been there since 1955 and has been a staple in the community for 70 years. With the closure of the venue, locals will be waiting in anticipation over the winter for the new Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre, which is set to open in August.

Construction on the new swimming centre kicked off back in 2022, making this a long time coming. The new spot will include a 25m x 10-lane competition and lap pool, a learn to swim pool, a shallow entry pool with water play, a warm water therapy pool, a gym and fitness rooms, a creche and community meeting rooms, and a cafe. Plus, there’ll be room for expansion outside in the future with an outdoor pool, splash pads, waterslides, sports courts and more.

“We are sad to say goodbye to Mount Barker Pool, but we are excited to see Council transform the location and what is planned ahead. Watch this space, the Council will open an incredible new facility for the community later this year,” they shared.

While this was a one-off event at the now-closed Mount Barker Mountain Pool, other venues do throw events like this every so often. On Sunday, May 4th, the Strathalbyn Community Swimming Pool will be throwing a Paw Party at the pool. For more information, click here.
