Angela Harding: Just like you…only different – 2012 Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Presented by 2012 Adelaide Cabaret Festival
Reviewed Saturday 9th June 2012

Singer, songwriter, and pianist, Angela Harding, is the winner of the 2011 Australian Cabaret Showcase, and it is not hard to see why. With her accompanist at the piano, she presents a collection of her own songs, along with a couple of well known tunes. In a rambling narrative, her songs and patter range from being a child just starting school, and being an outcast, through receiving home schooling, along with her siblings, and to discovering, after marrying the man that she thought she knew, that she is going to be a rugby league widow every weekend during the football season.

Aspects of her career as a performer, of course, are a big part of her life and she sings about being a ‘triple threat’, a term used in the business to refer to a performer who can sing, dance, and act, all at a high standard. More importantly, she sings about in which order she puts those three on her CV, depending on the job she is chasing and explains how much, or little, of a threat she really is in each area. She humorously describes auditions as being like dating.

Harding has a superb voice and a great vocal range, and she also has exceptional diction, as she demonstrated with some high speed, tongue twisting lyrics. Not only does she know how to really sell a song, she also has a bright personality and an easy manner that captures the audience immediately and keeps them in her grasp throughout the performance. Throw in some clever and witty lyrics and you have her winning formula. She is a valuable addition to the Australian cabaret scene.
