OzAsia Festival has announced Anh Do’s ‘The Happiest Refugee Live!’ will be featured in this year’s lineup. Scheduled for November 7th at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre, this stand-up show will blend humour with heartfelt storytelling.

Anh Do, a celebrated comedian and writer, will retell his journey from Vietnam to Australia, originally documented in his award-winning, best-selling memoir, The Happiest Refugee. His narrative is not only a personal reflection, but also an inspirational story of tragedy and triumph, illustrated with humour and raw emotion.

The show will combine live storytelling with photographs and film, creating an experience that has consistently earned standing ovations nationwide. Critics have praised Do’s performance, with The Sydney Morning Herald noting his “irrepressible good humour, infectious energy and bright optimism” and ArtsHub calling it “the happiest audience experience I have ever had.”

“I’m so excited to be bringing my show ‘The Happiest Refugee Live’ back to Adelaide. I love performing at Festival Theatre and can’t wait to share my story at OzAsia Festival,” Anh Do said.

Arriving in Australia in 1980 as a Vietnamese refugee, Anh Do’s life story is shaped by incredible challenges and marked by remarkable achievements. His career spans across different creative fields, making him one of the most unique and admired figures in the Australian entertainment landscape.

This year’s OzAsia Festival, under the leadership of Artistic and Executive Producer Joon-Yee Kwok, aims to reflect the rich tapestry of Asian cultures through a range of performances and exhibitions. Kwok highlighted the importance of Asian representation in the arts and described Anh Do as a personal hero, whose mainstream success has been significantly influential.

The festival, renowned for showcasing premier arts from across Asia, features theatre, dance, music, visual arts, and more, highlighting both traditional and contemporary Asian and Asian Australian arts and culture. Running from October 24th to November 10th, the festival attracts not only art lovers, but also wider audiences looking to explore rich cultural offerings.
