Freedom Hill Sanctuary, a well-known animal shelter in Brinkley, SA, has recently issued an urgent plea on Facebook for financial support, as the future of their sanctuary and the animals who call it home hangs in the balance. Mounting financial pressure and veterinary bills have bought the sanctuary to a critical point and a heartbreaking realisation for Kym, the founder of Freedom Hill.
“I checked our bank account and saw just $325 remaining. It was a moment that left me heartbroken.”
As the first and largest farm sanctuary in South Australia, Freedom Hill has stood as a safe haven for animals with nowhere else to go for over a decade. Without support, the survival of this sanctuary—and the promise of a safe future for these animals — is placed at risk. In her post, Kym said that at least $30,000 was needed to clear their vet bills and cover food expenses.
For Kym and her family, running an animal sanctuary sanctuary has come with “immense personal sacrifices”. For years, they’ve had to live without a proper house, weekends away, or financial security to ensure that the sanctuary thrives. They’ve gone into debt to keep the farm’s gates open and the animals looked after.
Kym now acts as the sole manager of the sanctuary, organising the care of her residents, handling rescues, responding to emails, managing social media, and working through a “never-ending to-do list”. With her husband Richard no longer able to assist on the farm due to health challenges, the weight of this mission has fallen entirely upon Kym’s shoulders, and there are only so many hours in the day.
“Without your help, we cannot continue to provide the care these animals need, nor can we open our arms to more in desperate need of rescue. We need your support.”
“This is our SOS. We are facing an urgent situation and truly need your help. With your support, we hope to raise the necessary funds to overcome this challenge.”
In the past day, over 400 generous donors have been flooding to the animal sanctuary’s rescue, offering donations from small to lofty sums to try and keep the initiative afloat. Currently, about $19,000 has been raised, making up around 60% of what they need.
If you have a spare few dollars to support this important cause, head to the donation page to contribute. Even the price of a pint or a cup of coffee could go a long way in securing the safe future of these precious animals. Make sure to also share the Facebook post to raise as much awareness as possible.
