2012 Young Gun of Wine Awards

Started in 2007, the Young Gun of Wine Awards are now into their sixth edition.

The Young Gun of Wine Awards have become recognized for not only spotting exciting new winemaking talent throughout Australia, but also emerging trends in wine styles, grape varieties and winemaking techniques.

“Beyond paying tribute to the creativity and leadership of the most visionary winemakers in the country, The Young Gun of Wine Award symbolises a movement to make wine more current,” says v-know and Young Gun of Wine Award founder Rory Kent. “We believe in challenging the status quo. We see greater opportunities for wine through better understanding of the craft and through its fashion potential. A world where people discuss and consume wine as readily as they do other interests like clothing, entertainment or food.”

After a year-round search and selection process by judges Nick Stock, Max Allen, Philip Rich, Rory Kent and Mike Aylward (the 2011 Young Gun of Wine), the top twelve finalists of 2012 have been determined and can be announced for the first time:

Abel Gibson, Ruggabellus (South Australia)
Adrian Rodda, A. Rodda Wines (Victoria)
Alex Head, Head Wines (South Australia)
Andrew Marks, The Wanderer (Victoria & Emporda, Spain)
David Bowley, Vinteloper (South Australia)
Dylan McMahon, Seville Estate (Victoria)
Franco D'Anna, Hoddles Creek (Victoria)
Nick Glaetzer, Glaetzer-Dixon (Tasmania)
Shane Holloway, Delamere (Tasmania)
Syd Bradford, Thick as Thieves (Victoria)
Taras Ochota, Ochota Barrels (South Australia)
Tom Munro, Whisson Lake (South Australia)

Chief Judge, Nick Stock said, “These mavericks are today’s winemaking stars and tomorrow’s legends,” and, “This generation is without a doubt the strongest to ever ride through the Australian wine scene.”

The twelve finalists of the Awards are in contention for two designer trophies, the “People’s Choice Award” and the “Young Gun of Wine”, each in the form a golden gun-wine bottle.

The People’s Choice Award is determined by consumer voting at a free public tasting session hosted at the Prince Wine Store (177 Bank Street, South Melbourne), 12pm-3pm on Saturday December 1. At this event, all the winemakers are in attendance to chat with attendees and pour samples of their competition wines.

For consumer enquiries, phone Prince Wine Store 03 9686 3033.
