It’s the end of an era for the beloved Café Komodo in Prospect, after it announced it is scheduled to close on June 29.
The devastating news comes as venues across Adelaide continue to have to shut their doors, and others struggle to remain open, due to the state’s worsening hospitality crisis.
“With the rising costs of doing business, it has become apparent that Café Komodo cannot survive in it’s current state,” Café Komodo said in a statement via Facebook.
“As a Community café serving the Prospect area for over 19 years and promoting the live music scene in Adelaide, the increased costs in doing business have made it impossible for us to continue.
“The Café has been on the market since November and unfortunately we have been unable to find someone to take on the business.
“If there is anyone looking to take over Cafe Komodo, please get in contact, because now is the time.
“Without someone coming forward to take on this community café, the final day of trade will be the 29th of June 2024.”
This year, Adelaide has a seen series of closures across cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs that has rocked the state. Among these are venues that were once considered industry icons.
Some closures are attributed to retirement, but predominately, the causes are mounting expenses, rising interest rates and ongoing staff shortages, that have placed financial pressure on many establishments.
In the face of these shutdowns, the community is encouraged to support their favourite venues, and throw some love behind small businesses.
Known amongst Adelaidians as a cracking live music venue, it has become a meeting point for many over the years.
Café Komodo now invites customers, old and new, to visit in the days leading up to its closure, with more details to come regarding closing events.
“More details will be forthcoming of closing events, so keep an eye out for those and let’s make sure we send off Café Komodo in the true Prospect way,” Café Komodo said.
“We are still open at this stage and would love for everyone to come past and say goodbye until our doors close for good.
“We have been so humbled by the messages and outpouring of love and support and how Cafe Komodo has touched your lives.”
