Shut It Down: The Parade Gears Up For Its Epic Street Party

The Tour Down Under just keeps on delivering with the amazing events…

The Tour Down Under isn’t all about the lycra! Every year the Tour Program sees a multitude of awesome events surrounding the world watched cycling event. One of those high on our must attend list is always the Norwood on Tour Street Party…

Foodies, families and cycling enthusiasts alike will want to check this one out when it hits The Parade on Thursday 21 January. From live music, children’s entertainment and sophisticated street eats, there will be something for everyone.

Building on the excitement in the lead up to the Bupa Stage 4 Start of the Santos Tour Down Under, the street party will light up The Parade from 5.00-10.00pm, the night before the world’s elite cyclists race it out.

The free outdoor event will feature an impressive line-up of live entertainment including performances from soulful songbird Angela Easson, children’s pop music band, The Funkees and swing band, Lucky Seven.

Revellers will also be treated to a plethora of food stalls with local businesses spilling out onto the street to offer a unique dining experience among wine barrels, artificial grass and festoon lighting.

The Grind, The Colonist, Base Bar, Pave Cafe, Argo on The Parade and newcomer Brick + Mortar, will be keeping bellies full with a range of culinary delights on offer from pulled pork sliders to paella, soul salads, empanadas and gazpacho. Plus our fave Grace The Establishment will be open and serving up delicious food and some cracking music. You can check out Anth Wendt from 5pm – 10pm and DJ Quinny from 10pm to late!

The City of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Mayor Robert Bria said, “We really encourage people of all ages to join the party atmosphere and celebrate the Tour. The event will enable people to experience The Parade in a new way in the lead up to the Bupa Challenge and Stage 4 of the STDU.”

Following on from the Street Party, The Parade will put the wheels in motion to stage the Bupa Challenge Tour at 6:30am and Stage 4 Start of the Santos Tour Down Under from 11:30am on Friday 22 January.

Mayor Robert Bria said it was fitting Norwood would once again play a key role in contributing to Australia’s biggest cycling event and the associated week-long celebrations across the state.

“Home to our State’s first velodrome, as well as the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest cycling club, our City has a well-deserved reputation as the Home of cycling in SA,” he said.

As part of the Norwood on Tour celebrations, the Council is also staging ‘The Cycling into History’ exhibition at the Norwood Town Hall until 5 February 2016.

The exhibition tells the unique story of the long and proud tradition of competitive cycling that underpins the city’s history and its association with the Santos Tour Down Under.

The Parade will be closed to traffic from 12.00 noon to 12.00 midnight between George to Edward Street on Thursday 21 January and from 2.00am to 1.30pm on Friday 22 January between The Parade from Osmond Terrace to Portrush Road; George Street from The Parade to Webbe Street and Edward Street, from The Parade to the entrance of Coles/Café Bravo car parks.
