Anthony Albanese sets May election date, pitches for second term as Prime Minister

The federal election has been announced for May 3, with the Prime Minister using the announcement to begin his campaigning for Labor.

This morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the federal election is set for May 3, kicking off a five-week campaign period across the country. In his announcement, Albanese appealed to voters by highlighting the choices between the policies of the Labor Party and those proposed by the Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

In a detailed speech highlighting his government’s achievements and future promises, Albanese discussed several key areas, including economic management, healthcare, and climate change initiatives. He emphasised the importance of the upcoming election, stating, “On the Third of May, you choose the way forward. Your vote has never been more important, and your choice has never been more clear.”

The Prime Minister’s speech was filled with comparisons between the policy directions of the Labor Party and the opposition. According to Albanese, the elections present a stark choice. “This election is a choice between Labor’s plan to keep building or Peter Dutton’s promise to cut,” said Albanese.

Addressing domestic policies, he underscored Labor’s commitment to financial relief for families and individuals. He mentioned that a vote for Labor would mean continued support in managing the cost of living, including a plan to slash 20% off student debts and implement tax cuts. “Our top-up tax cuts will mean an average tax cut of more than $2,500,” he explained.

On healthcare, Albanese highlighted Labor’s intention to further strengthen Medicare, aiming to implement the largest ever investment in bulk billing in Australia, setting up additional urgent care clinics, and reducing the costs of medicines.

Turning his attention to broader economic policies, the Prime Minister said, “Only Labor is building an economy where we make more things here, an economy defined by fair wages for hard work.” He accused the opposition of having a retrograde approach that risked the nation’s economic future by proposing policies that led to job losses and inadequate handling of the economic challenges posed by global inflation and energy crises.

Albanese also detailed initiatives aimed at combating climate change and enhancing national security. He appealed to the electorate’s desire for stability and progress, contrasting this with what he described as the opposition’s backward-looking approach.

As for the opposition, Albanese warned against the cuts he claimed Peter Dutton would implement if given the opportunity. “Everything in Peter Dutton’s record tells us that he will start by cutting Medicare, and he won’t stop there.”

In conclusion, the Prime Minister called for unity and support to continue the progress his government has begun. “This is a time for building, building on our nation’s strengths, building our security and prosperity for ourselves, building an Australia where no one is held back and no one is left behind,” he stated.
