Aquatics Industry Unites For a Safer Community

The Links Modular Solutions, 2011 State Aquatics Conference, presented by Recreation SA, will take place on Friday September 9th at the new South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Marion.

The event is for the local and national aquatics industry, and will host educational sessions, workshops, exhibits and networking opportunities for professionals in all areas of aquatics and aquatic recreation. There will be local and national guest speakers covering a variety of topics, including water safety, pool legislation and health, best practice facility design management and marketing ideas. This year there will also be an afternoon session just for lifeguards.

Senator Don Farrell, Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water will be launching the Watch Around Water program for 2011/2012 at the conference. Watch Around Water is a program which addresses the misconception by many parents that the supervision of young children is the sole responsibility of the lifeguards when visiting public aquatic facilities. Watch Around Water encourages parents/guardians to take on the accountability for adequately supervising their children while visiting public aquatic facilities.

Watch Around Water ambassador Brenton Ragless from Channel 9 will be speaking at the conference to help encourage the initiative and promote water safety for children.

Recreation SA CEO, Ian Dewey said, “Learning to swim is important especially with our Australian “girt by sea” lifestyle, however adequate supervision in the first 10 years is the critical factor in significantly reducing child drownings. No person who has been involved in a child drowning; parent, bystander, lifeguard ever fully recovers; but a few simple actions can substantially change the statistics for the better. Sadly; drowning’s of children have occurred as a result of parents who just don’t think about their responsibility to watch their children in a public pool.”

Conference attendees will also be taken on a guided tour of the brand new South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre, an opportunity to see behind the scenes in this state of the art facility that incorporates new technologies in the aquatics infrastructure industry.
