Arctic Monkeys get down to Business!

There’s no doubt that the Arctic Monkeys have paid their dues to earn themselves a spot on the rock and roll dance floor, and the young crowd at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre’s Theatre testified of this during Saturday night’s sell out show.

Supported by Perth psychedlic rockers ‘Pond’, who opened with a super cool set reminiscent of surf-psychedlic 60’s music, things were about to go apeshit as the Monkeys took to the stage.

Looking dapper in a black jacket and slicked back ‘Johnny Cash’ hairstyle, Alex Turner and his thick Sheffield accent delighted the crowd of mostly young and a few older fans.

Kicking off the set with “Do I Wanna Know’, it was evident that Alex Turner and his troop were running hot, and continued showering the crowd with an array of hits from the new album ‘AM’, complete with rigging put together in the form of ‘AM’, all lit up and serving as the perfect backdrop for the Theatre venue at the AEC.

After what seemed an initial problem with his earpiece, Turner delivered song after song with the same energy and bravado that the Brit lads are known for but curiously, there seemed to be a change of guitar after almost every song which may have been the reason for minimal interaction from the stage.

There were a few songs from earlier albums such as ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ and ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ which, in this reviewers mind, contains their best songs. They did though, belt out their smash hit ‘ I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor’, which drove the crowd into a groove frenzy and also ‘Brianstorm’, which kept the blood pumping and the feet moving on the beer soaked concrete floor.

Most of the latter half was slower and not what I’d expected of such an energetic band, and it would have been great to have some of their ‘faster stuff’ to jump around to.

Almost as soon as they’d started, they were waving goodbye and leaving the stage, leaving the audience to plead for the obligatory encore which came in the form of Alex Turner asking Adelaide “Do you want to go again?” The uproarious response was unanimous, and the lads finished the night with once again a slower set of songs that included ‘R U Mine?’ Overall it was a great night of music from the lads, no doubt they’ll do well on the remainder of the tour which winds up in Perth next Tuesday.
