Remember Their Names: Could These Designers Be Adelaide’s Next Big Thing In Fashion?

The Tafe SA graduates will take guests on a trip around the globe when they present their beautiful designs in the highly anticipated parade at the Freemasons Hall…

The 2015 TAFE SA Fashion Graduate Parade on 27 November will showcase the talents of students from around the world.

The parade at Freemasons Hall will feature the work of 11 Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Technology students from Australia, Brazil, China, Iran, Serbia and Sudan.

Their six-piece collections range from streetwear to eveningwear. The parade will feature the work of fashion student Sophia McMahon, the inaugural winner of the Premier’s Design Award at the 2015 Adelaide Fashion Festival.

Sophia – whose award provides 12 months of mentoring in the South Australian fashion industry – said she enjoyed the challenge to create designs from “a purely creative perspective” and was influenced by nature, religion, architecture and design.

“I’m really excited to see everyone’s collections take shape – they are all so different from each other, which is wonderful. It will make for an engaging parade,” Sophia said.

Principal Lecturer Helen Jansson described the cohort as “eclectic and culturally diverse”.

“The student collections are focused on fit, construction and design as they navigate the complexities of special-occasion fabrics. They are creating unique pieces that reflect the individual students’ journeys,” Ms Jansson said.

Fashion student Coco Liu said her graduate collection was inspired by her childhood in Shanghai and Beijing. Coco has used eye-catching fabrics including jacquard, which she said represents the rows of skyscraper windows she misses from the two cities.

“Each student has their own aesthetic understanding of fashion, which probably will be influenced by their culture,” Coco said.

The 2015 TAFE SA Fashion Graduate Parade will be held in the Freemasons Hall from 7pm on Friday 27 November. Tickets are $40 and available from Fashion Admin on 8207 8522.

TAFE SA is South Australia’s only fashion design training centre. Graduates work at leading fashion labels locally, nationally and internationally.
