Commonality is an art exhibition featuring local Adelaide artists exploring how various styles and experiences merge into a single story. The exhibition will be held over a month between March 22nd and April 26th at Gallery M in the Marion Cultural Centre.
The official opening will be held on Friday, March 28th between 5:30 and 8pm, with a panel discussion led by Toni Hassan to be held on Saturday, April 12th from 1:30 – 3pm.
Commonality explores the paradox of shared isolation experienced as emerging artists. This theme comes through in individual pieces and collaborative works on display at the exhibition.
Over the last two years, the exhibition developed from a shared sense of isolation while practising as emerging artists. By coming together and comparing experiences over recent years, the artists exhibited in Commonality have recognised common threads and an eagerness for collaboration.
The innate passion to paint and how this frames the way artists look at the world around us is a realisation which the Commonality artists have worked into their studio practices. The exhibition is all about collaboration and painting in pairs to illustrate connectedness and shared experiences.
Six artists are on display for the month including the following:

Ahead of the exhibition, Lucinda Penn said, “Being afforded a 2 year lead up to this group show has been incredibly special as it has allowed us to meet up periodically to discuss evolving ideas and concepts for a full scale collaboration from concept to execution.”
“I think we have achieved our goal of overcoming isolation by realising the commonalities of our experiences. I have really enjoyed merging brains with my housemate and good friend Max Ballard to create 3 collaborative works inspired by our shared experiences in our creative home and studios over the last few years,” Lucinda added.
A poem by Harry T Gent summarises the underlying theme of the exhibition:
“What we have in common
Hardly if at all
Longer that we listen
Will halt inner downfall
Getting things in motion
Creating in your home
Pushing through the tough
Experience alone
Erupt out of the cycle
Confide in a friend
Collaborating works
Unblocking a dead-end
Broaching it together
Moving with intent
Each taking the weight
Released us of the torment”
