Art Gallery of South Australia launches First Fridays

First Fridays kicks off at the Art Gallery this month, giving people who work in the city the opportunity to start their weekend with a drink and something to eat and then immerse themselves in some of the finest art in South Australia.

first-fridaysNick Mitzevich, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia today announced a new partnership with Santos which will allow the Gallery to stay open until 9pm on the first Friday of each month.

“Called ‘First Fridays’, this is a wonderful opportunity for people who work in the city to start their weekend with a drink and something to eat and then immerse themselves in some of the finest art in South Australia” said Nick Mitzevich.

“We have had an enormously successful partnership  with the Art Gallery of South Australia for many years. Santos is delighted to continue this support for the Gallery with First Fridays, a monthly event that will offer us all a fabulous opportunity to discover, or rediscover, the Art Gallery”, said Petrina Coventry, Vice President at Santos.

Minister for the Arts, the Hon Jack Snelling who will officially launch the first, First Friday, said it creates an opportunity to expose more South Australians to one of Adelaide’s premier art institutions.

“This is about people who otherwise wouldn’t have the time or the opportunities to visit the Art Gallery, being able to relax with friends after work on a Friday and at the same time experience what the gallery has to offer”, he said.

First Fridays, the first of which is this Friday November 7,  will offer ‘twilight tours’ with guest speakers and live music and in addition the Gallery Shop and the Art Gallery Food + Wine will be open as well.

We promise there will be something for everyone said Nick Mitzevich.  “If people haven’t seen our major exhibition Fashion Icons, this Friday evening will be a great opportunity and if you would like to see some fine art then we have one of the best collections of European, British and Australian art in the country.  We know there is a demand for this cultural experience and through the generous support of Santos, we are now able to do what we have wanted to be able to for some time” said Nick Mitzevich.

More than 700,000 people visit this Gallery each year and are looking for great food and wine to complement their rich art experience.  “We are confident that the Gallery will be ‘the’ place to come to straight from work on the First Friday of each month. We are encouraging people to think of the Gallery as a ‘launch pad’ for their weekend”, added Nick Mitzevich.
