Art of the Possible Festival celebrating student creativity at University of Adelaide

Student creativity will be in the spotlight at The Art of the Possible Festival at the University of Adelaide this week.

Creativity knows no boundaries, and the University of Adelaide is proving just that with its ‘Art of the Possible Festival,’ taking place this week.

Happening across three days from 23rd to 26th October, this festival pays homage to student creativity spanning diverse genres- be it live music, virtual reality, photography, or graphic design.

“The Art of the Possible festival not only celebrates creativity but prepares students to infuse our economy with diverse creative prowess, essential for tomorrow’s workforce,” University of Adelaide Professor Tom Hajdu, Chair of Creative Technologies, Elder Conservatorium of Music and Director of the Sia Furler Institute for Contemporary Music and Media says.

“This year’s theme, The Creative Stage, underscores the significance of student creativity—a skill the World Economic Forum deems critical for the future.”

Here’s a peek into what awaits you at the festival:

1. Music on the lawns: Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Barr Smith lawns, the event will commence with a traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ performance. People will tune into of Dem Mob’s hip-hop tunes in the age-old Pitjantjatjara Language and the entrancing performances by the University’s Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) will surely be a treat for the ears.

This will be complemented by pop and jazz renditions from the Elder Conservatorium of Music’s emerging talents, including bands House of Pillars and Quebec Echo. Various food trucks will be on site with tasty food and drinks sponsored by Red Bull will quench your thirst.

2. Cinematic experiences: The Union Cinema promisese a reel journey of student-made short films. Enhancing this cinematic immersion will be wine-tasting sessions featuring Fox Creek Wines. The inaugural film event will showcase the SBS/NITV music documentary ‘Black Empire,’ diving deep into the trials and tribulations faced by First Nations artists in the music domain.

3. QR Codes- Unlock Creativity: Venturing into the digital age, the Barr Smith Library Reading Room will transform into a space where QR codes unveil a world of audio, creative writing, and journalism.

4. The Hub- Exhibition of Art and Technology: A medley of student projects on virtual reality, photography, graphic design, and more will be exhibited.

“This VR/spatial computing event highlights the next generation of creative talent in this space, and also shows attendees what is going to be possible in the near future,” The University of Adelaide’s Steven Cook, Senior Lecturer of Immersive Technologies says.

Among the many creators, a noteworthy team comprises Abdullah Al-Amri, Brooke Virgo, and Tim Horasio—creative marketers from the University of Adelaide. Their venture, Sight Studios, is crafted to aid small businesses harness the power of AI in marketing.

“The Art of the Possible celebrates our studies which have helped us develop the skills that will fuel our creative futures,” Third year Bachelor of Creative Arts student Tim Horasio says.
