SA’s much-loved elephant Burma has finished her quarantine and is finally ready to explore her new home at Monarto Safari Park. As the first Asian elephant to join the park, Burma’s arrival has been a major event, and she’s already winning over the hearts of her keepers and visitors with her playful personality.
Monarto Safari Park has shared that Burma took the first steps out of her quarantine yard and into the big, wide world of her new elephant home. After a month of settling in, they say she’s already loving the three-acre habitat, complete with a waterhole and lots of space to explore – all designed to feel just like the natural environments elephants thrive in.
Monarto Safari Park has also announced that Burma will soon have a new elephant friend. Permai, a female elephant from Perth Zoo, will be joining Burma in late January 2025. After spending 32 years at Perth Zoo, Permai is ready for her big move to Monarto. Originally planned for later in the year, the move has been sped up because Burma has settled in so well, and Permai is making great progress with her crate training.

Permai’s journey to Monarto will be a comfortable one, thanks to her specially designed travel crate. It’s equipped with air conditioning, temperature gauges, cameras for monitoring, and even a 1000-litre water tank. She’ll have constant access to food and water, making sure she’s well cared for every step of the way.
Burma’s first steps and the upcoming arrival of Permai come at an exciting time for Zoos SA. This weekend just gone, Adelaide Zoo welcomed two new giant pandas, Xing Qiu (born in 2020) and Yi Lan (bown in 2021), who made the long journey from China.

If you’re keen to see Burma in her new home, be sure to pre-book your tickets to Monarto Safari Park. To make sure everyone has the best experience, there are visitor caps in place, so it’s a good idea to reserve your spot in advance. Burma is already a star attraction, and with Permai joining her in early 2025, Monarto Safari Park is about to become a very busy destination.
