What happens when the Barossa’s finest meets the city’s most celebrated musicians? The answer lies in Notes & Notes, a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Hentley Farm and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, taking place on Friday 24 October at Grainger Studio.
This one-night-only event will take seated guests through six different wine tastings paired with six live performances from ASO musicians. It’s not just a poetic pairing either, it’s scientific. Music evokes emotions and memories that can alter our sensory perception, meaning the right melody can make a wine seem richer, smoother, or more vibrant. This is a concept Notes & Notes brings deliciously to life.
Stuart Mosman, CEO of Hentley Farm said, “Music and wine are a kindred spirit, both are born from passion and creativity. For centuries pairing food and wine has been a culinary artform, with the cuisines taste and aromas changing the perception of the wines flavours.”
“Pairing music with wine produces incredible results, by affecting your mood or attitude and thus changing the perception of how a wine tastes. Quite often they invoke memories and always, great conversations. For me, the harmony between music and wine elevates both arts to another level and we are excited to share this with our members and donors.”

Seated around small tables of six inside Grainger Studio, the ASO’s creative home, guests will enjoy front-row seats as musicians perform from four scattered stages around the room. Each classical performance will complement a specific wine, from sparkling to shiraz, revealing how music can shape the way we taste and feel.
The idea was born from a creative collaboration between the ASO and Hentley Farm teams, who worked closely to match each wine’s unique profile with a corresponding musical work. Think Beethoven or Tchaikovsky with a bold Barossa red, or perhaps a delicate sparkling matched with something lighter.
Justin Julian, ASO Principal Viola, said, “Sharon and I look forward to performing Beethoven’s Duet for Viola and Cello ‘mit zwei obligaten Augengläsern’. The famously tempestuous Beethoven also had a fun side. He wrote this duet to play with his bespectacled cello-playing friend Nikolaus Zmeskall.”
“The title ‘with two obligatory eyeglasses’ humorously refers to their declining eyesight. The music captures the spirit of their friendship in its witty repartee between the two instruments. Zmeskall reputedly provided fine wines for them to enjoy together, so it’s quite likely this music has been paired with great wine before…”

Over 90 minutes, audiences can expect a multisensory evening through taste and sound. Alongside the guided wine flight, guests will enjoy nibbles including fresh bread, olive oil, almonds and olives.
Whether you love wine and want to taste it in a different light, or you’re curious how classical music can impact taste, there’s no better seat than at one of the tables in Grainger Studio for Notes & Notes.
