Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved the Oxford University-developed AstraZeneca vaccine for people over 18, making it the country’s second vaccine to reach this stage.
“The AstraZeneca vaccine will be distributed through many…locations, including general practice clinics, GP respiratory clinics, vaccination clinics and pharmacies,” the TGA statement says.
“The first priority groups in Australia can start receiving this vaccine in early March.”
This is the second vaccine approved by the TGA after Pfizer/BioNTech was approved last month. Through testing, SA Health prioritises “safety, quality and effectiveness.”
“Before a vaccine is registered for use, it is tested extensively during development and then in thousands of people,” the SA Health website says.
The TGA promises they “will only register a vaccine if its benefits are much greater than its risks.”
The Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine will be manufactured by CSL, a Melbourne-headquartered pharmaceutical company, in partnership with AstraZenec, the international developer.
