ATEC is a not-for-profit organisation which has continuously evolved by successfully partnering with employers, government agencies and a range of professional organisations. These partnerships have enabled ATEC to play a key role in launching and enhancing the careers of 1000s of South Australians – in line with its vision to promote the uptake of apprenticeships and support South Australia’s industrial workforce needs through lower cost, flexible, employment focused, high quality training. In the last 10 years alone, ATEC has trained over 7,000 students, including 3,500 apprentices.

Founded on 4 May 1989 as a shipbuilding and metal fabrication training facility at Largs North – now, in 2014, ATEC is a Registered Training Organisation which operates four well-equipped training sites at Ottoway, Port Adelaide, Lonsdale and Noarlunga. These sites have been purchased and upgraded in partnership with State and Federal Governments through important co-contribution infrastructure funding grants and highly valued employer sponsorship arrangements.

The Open Day events on Friday 30 May will be held at ATEC’s two industry-focused skills training centres at Ottoway and Lonsdale, as well as its Port Adelaide Community Services Training Centre. The Open Day events are for employers, service providers, workers, apprentices, school leavers and the general public to see and experience first-hand – ATEC’s electrical, mechanical, general construction and community services (aged care and disability) training facilities and meet ATEC trainers to discuss course options and employment opportunities. Activities will include interactive workshops and information booths.

In addition to the wide range of training courses on offer at ATEC, since 2003 the organisation has provided Group Training Scheme services – as part of its commitment to promote the uptake of Trades by employing manufacturing and electrical apprentices. ATEC Group Training handles the employer aspects of apprenticeships – offering businesses flexible apprenticeship arrangements in place of a traditional four year commitment. For the apprentices the emphasis is on mentoring and support that leads to greater apprenticeship completion rates, skill attainment and an ideal apprenticeship experience. Employers and those seeking an apprenticeship are encouraged to attend the Open Day events at the Lonsdale and Ottoway sites on Friday May 30, where members of ATEC’s Group Training team will be available to discuss how the scheme can help with apprenticeship options.

Lynne Austin, ATEC’s CEO and longest serving employee, says “Whether it’s giving young South Australians a start on a viable career path through an accredited training program, providing crucial pre-employment training opportunities to disadvantaged members of the community, or assisting metropolitan and regional-based employers with access to trade apprentices, ATEC’s dedicated employees are committed to building bridges of opportunity between industry and workers.”
