Visit Adelaide Gaol this History Day and explore the site, stories, and collections of one of Adelaide’s oldest colonial buildings.
The Gaol Road Market will feature in the wider events of History Day, including homeware stalls, fashion stalls and various other nic-nacs.
The event, along with the markets stalls and other activities, include a classic display vehicles from the Chrysler Restorers Club.
This year you can walk through the never-before-seen Story Cells and learn the untold stories of some of the gaols iconic characters.
“The new Contemplation Cell provides a compelling insight into the thoughts and feelings of prisoners and how they coped with prison life. It features Mother Mary MacKillop and illustrates how she brought light into an otherwise dark place.” Adelaide Gaol says.
Purchase a limited-edition hand-engraved rooftop slate tile from the original 1841 build this History Day. Take home a piece of Adelaide Gaol and hold in your hands a part of South Australian heritage forever.
The newly exhibited Original Cell Block Display showcases artefacts from the gaol’s chapel, as well as a miniature model of Adelaide Gaol and a prisoner-made model of the Cutty Sark ship.
Self-guided tours, spooky exhibits and special displays. It’s a large site with many nooks and crannies to explore – many are filled with tales of dramatic escapes, ghostly apparitions and haunting executions.
Visit the Time Inside exhibition for another gritty taste of history. You can also meet Gaol book authors and tour operators with more stories to share.
Enjoy fine coffee and refreshments among the books, clothes, games and cool souvenirs or grab a some of the tasty treats from one of the many food trucks. There are plenty of grassy picnic areas too.
The event will take place on Sunday May 15th at 10:00am – 4:00pm.
