Australia launches new tourism dashboard to boost sustainable growth

The LIVE Framework aims to transform the tourism industry by incorporating economic, environmental, social, and institutional indicators.

The Albanese Labor Government has recently introduced a revolutionary new tool to assist in monitoring and fostering the growth of Australia’s tourism sector. Announced by Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism, the LIVE Framework (Longitudinal Indicators for the Visitor Economy) is an innovative data dashboard designed to measure and promote sustainable development within the tourism industry.

Launched on November 20th, the Framework aims to provide a comprehensive view of tourism’s impacts, including economic, environmental, social, and institutional aspects. The initiative outlines a commitment from the government to understand and quantify tourism’s contributions to regional communities and the nation at large.

“Our Government has always understood the value of tourism to our regions and communities across Australia, and the new LIVE Framework will enable us to quantify this contribution for the first time,” said Minister Farrell.

“The Framework goes beyond purely economic metrics to understand Australia’s visitor economy, giving researchers, industry, experts, and governments the ability to more accurately track and measure the overall health, contribution and sustainable growth of our tourism and travel sector, and make better decisions.”

The LIVE Framework represents a shift towards a more informed approach to managing tourism growth. Traditionally, tourism success has been monitored through metrics like visitor numbers, expenditure, and job creation. The new framework, however, expands these parameters, incorporating broader indicators to provide a more holistic view of the sector’s health and its future direction.

The dashboard includes 21 initial indicators that cover a diverse range of topics. These topics include Australia’s capacity to accommodate international flights, its reputation as an accessible destination, and how its tourism-related greenhouse gas emissions compare to other nations. This data aims to give stakeholders, from business owners to government bodies, earlier and more precise information for making critical decisions.

The LIVE Framework dashboard is a user-friendly, interactive tool developed by Tourism Research Australia. It is expected to not only ensure better strategic planning and operational adjustments within the tourism industry but also enhance the ability of researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to assess and strategise for sustainable growth.

All individuals and entities involved in the tourism sector are encouraged to explore the LIVE Framework and utilise the insights it offers to optimize their operations and strategies. With access to timely and accurate data, stakeholders can anticipate enhanced decision-making capabilities, gearing towards a more prosperous and sustainable visitor economy.
