Australian airline enters voluntary administration with all flights cancelled between major cities

Australia’s third largest airline, Rex Airlines, has entered voluntary administration, leading to the cancellation of all flights between major airports.

Australia’s third largest airline, Rex Airlines, has entered voluntary administration, leading to the cancellation of all flights between major airports.

In a statement posted on their website, Rex announced: “Regional Express Holdings Limited and several of its subsidiaries have entered voluntary administration.”

As a result, Rex has grounded all of its Boeing 737 jets, and affected passengers will be contacted directly by the airline.

“Flights between major airports have been cancelled, with the Rex Group’s domestic fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft all grounded. Affected customers are being contacted directly by Rex,” the statement read.

Despite the halt in major city flights, Rex’s regional services using Saab 340 turboprop aircraft will continue as normal. The airline has confirmed that prepaid tickets for regional routes will still be honoured.

“Regional Saab 340 flights are currently unaffected by the administration and will continue to operate. Prepaid ticket holders will continue to have their tickets honoured by the Rex Group on regional routes,” the statement read.

Virgin Australia is stepping in to help by offering free rebooking for Rex customers with cancelled 737 tickets. Affected passengers can transfer their tickets to Virgin Australia flights by contacting the airline’s Guest Contact Centre, or visiting its website before August 14th. Virgin Australia is making efforts to accommodate these travellers as close as possible to their original departure times.

The airline and Virgin Australia are also exploring partnerships to support regional customers. This could include Virgin Australia selling Rex’s regional flights through codeshare agreements and making Velocity Frequent Flyer benefits available to Rex’s regional passengers.

“The Administrators would like to thank Virgin Australia on behalf of impacted Rex customers and
regional communities for its support during this difficult time,” the statement read.

“The Rex Group has a long and proud history of servicing regional and remote communities across
Australia.”
