Sean Edwards, Judge and industry expert, said, “For café owners, it has come down to customer expectations and the fight to stay in that top one percent of the hit list of Australia’s best café’s. With an industry of over thirty thousand cafes nationally, the competition is tough.”

“Our research shows that people want more from their local café and food is becoming the next hero after good coffee service,” said Mr Edwards.

It is no surprise that the Australian café industry has grown exponentially over the past ten years. In a survey conducted by Café Pulse, it has been found that café service is used monthly by 81% of the population, making it the most popular part of the hospitality sector.

Following two consecutive years in New Zealand, the Australian Café of the Year awards have hit our shores to offer Aussie cafes the chance to showcase their culinary skills and friendly service that they are known across the world for.

Last year in New Zealand, close to 700 cafes entered and over 46,000 consumer votes were cast and due to overwhelming success, the competition is going into its third year in New Zealand, running consecutively with the Australian competition.

Competing cafes will be judged on their ability to create an outstanding dish on their menu featuring ingredients from Heinz and Don ranges that rivals all other entrants. Once the public has spoken, 21 regional finalists will be selected and a panel of expert judges will decide on 7 regional winners with the judging criteria based on the signature dish as well as customer service and overall atmosphere.

Along with the triumph and pride that comes with the title of Australian Café of the Year, the supreme winner will also take home a Renault Clio RS200 Sport. The search is on – will your café take home the bragging rights and inaugural title of Australian Café of the Year?
