Off the back of the hugely successful national tour of G, Australian Dance Theatre will again break new boundaries this September. Adelaide’s Anne and Gordon Samstag Museum of Art will host the world premiere of Nought – a performing visual masterpiece which will confront and delight audiences alike.
Choreographed by Adelaide born and senior dancer for the Australian Dance Theatre, Daniel Jaber, the one hour production will challenge the way people view dance performances. Not only will the piece be presented in a traditional art gallery space for the first time under Garry Stewart’s artistic direction, but the dancers will also be exposed at their most vulnerable, allowing the audience to see dance in its purest form.
“The work has periods of silence, mixed with beautiful music and spoken words to emphasise the dancers’ vulnerabilities. With the silence you are able to see and hear the dancers’ exhaustion. It exposes the dancers in a new light – I expect people will be equally provoked and amazed by their sheer talent and bravery,” said Daniel.
Garry Stewart, the globally renowned Artistic Director for Australian Dance Theatre said that this was the first time the company has commissioned a dancer to create a full-length work to be promoted under the company’s banner.
“Daniel is so talented and has created a beautiful work in Nought. The Samstag Museum of Art offers an intimate contemporary space, that forms the perfect backdrop to a piece of work that will draw out a range of emotions for all who experience it,” he said.
Daniel was very grateful to be given this opportunity.
“To create the first full-length work on the Australian Dance Theatre is such an honour and will be a career changing event.
“Nought is an experiential performance where the audience is taken through a process of discovery, ending with a poignant insight into the dancing body and the dancer’s fragility.
“The piece is framed by the most elegant and beautifully delicate costumes designed by the uber talented and local fashion designer Catherine Ziersch, and sound is by Swiss-born Thomas Jeker.” said Daniel Jaber.
Due to their heavy touring commitments interstate and abroad, it has been 18- months since Australian Dance Theatre has performed locally, and the entire company is thrilled to be performing on home ground again.
