Forty years ago, in a humble Mount Barker shed in the Adelaide Hills, something extraordinary began to take root. Jurlique, now one of Australia’s most iconic skincare brands, was born from a simple yet revolutionary idea: that true beauty is found in nature.
Fast forward four decades, and what started as a visionary dream by husband-and-wife team Jurgen and Ulrike Klein has blossomed into a global leader in natural skincare, all while staying deeply grounded in the Adelaide Hills where it all began.
Jurlique’s story is unlike any other. While the beauty industry has raced ahead chasing trends, this quietly powerful brand has stayed true to its original purpose—cultivating high-performing botanical skincare with integrity, care, and a connection to the earth that runs deeper than the roots of their roses.
“As we mark our 40th anniversary, we reflect on the incredible journey that has brought us here,” said Loïc Rethore, CEO of Jurlique. “Our commitment to delivering naturally effective skincare has never wavered. We’re grateful for the trust our community has placed in us over the years and are excited to continue evolving while remaining true to our heritage of biodynamic farming and sustainable beauty practices.”

I’ve grown up in the Adelaide Hills and have lived there most of my life. When I first discovered that Jurlique was a local brand—grown, harvested, created, packaged, and distributed by Hills locals—I felt a sense of immense pride.
Over 20 years ago, I had the most wonderful experience visiting the Mount Barker Springs Jurlique farm, nestled on a hillside just kilometres from where I lived. It was one of my first exposures to, and lessons in, biodynamic farming practices.
It’s biodynamics that is Jurlique’s secret—a biodynamic farm that many would argue is the heart and soul of the brand. Set across lush acreage in the pristine Adelaide Hills, the farm grows over 40 botanicals using sustainable, biodynamic methods that respect the rhythms of the seasons and the health of the soil.
Now located between Echunga and Mylor, the farm isn’t just where their ingredients grow—it’s where the story of every Jurlique product begins.
From seed to skin, the journey is thoughtful and transparent, guided by a philosophy that everything should nourish—whether it’s the skin, the land, or the people who use the products. Each plant is harvested at its peak, hand-tended by people who understand the delicate dance of nature and science. That care is evident in every bottle, every mist, every serum.
The Rosewater Balancing Mist, Activating Water Essence+, and Rare Rose Face Oil have become cult favourites for a reason. These products don’t just smell beautiful or feel luxurious—they work. Backed by science, yet crafted with nature at their core, they’re proof that performance and purity can absolutely go hand in hand.

To mark its 40-year milestone in 2025, Jurlique is opening its farm gates a little wider, inviting visitors to experience the magic behind the brand. Their farm tours offer more than just a walk through the fields. They provide a rare, behind-the-scenes look into the propagation of seedlings, the crafting of compost, the principles of biodynamic farming, and the plants that power their skincare.
Guests walk away not just with knowledge, but with a renewed connection to the source of their favourite products.
“As we look ahead to the next 40 years, our focus remains on innovating with nature, advancing sustainable beauty practices, and empowering our community to embrace natural skincare,” Rethore added. “Jurlique’s journey is just beginning, and we’re excited to continue evolving while celebrating the timeless bond between beauty, wellbeing, and nature.”
And for those wanting something truly special, there’s the Private Immersion Tour. This one-on-one experience is guided by a Jurlique Brand Ambassador and is designed to peel back the layers of the brand’s philosophy in an intimate, tailored setting.
From understanding how soil health affects the effectiveness of a serum, to witnessing the gentle harvest of calendula destined for a future face oil, the tour feels almost meditative in its depth and detail.
At springtime, Jurlique offers a particularly special invitation: a chance to step into the fields and harvest botanicals yourself. Guests begin with a guided farm tour, then hand-pick flowers and herbs straight from the source before heading into the drying room and Farm Shop to craft a personalised blend using Jurlique’s pure essential oils. It’s a rare chance to play a part in the seed-to-skin story and create something uniquely your own.

While the brand continues to innovate—with recent launches like the revitalised Herbal Recovery range and soothing Calendula Face Oil—it remains rooted in the values that shaped it all those years ago. Conscious beauty. Sustainability. Giving back more than it takes.
And now, with B Corp certification under its belt, Jurlique’s commitment to environmental and social impact has been recognised on a global scale.
It’s a rare thing to see a brand grow bigger without growing away from its beginnings. But Jurlique has managed to expand to over 27 countries while still keeping its feet firmly planted in South Australian soil.
As they look ahead to the next chapter, Jurlique shows no signs of slowing. If anything, it’s only becoming more connected, more sustainable, and more deeply in tune with what modern beauty lovers are seeking: transparency, performance, and a sense of purpose.
From a Mount Barker shed to the shelves of beauty stores around the world, Jurlique’s journey has always been one of passion and authenticity.
As they celebrate 40 years, one thing is clear: their story is far from over. In fact, it feels like it’s just beginning.
