Autumn Racing Fashion Tips

If you are like most Adelaide women you’ll be off and racing to find that perfect outfit to wear to one of this year’s horse racing events. If you are a bit unsure as to how to go about picking a winning look, here are a few tips to make sure your field fashion is not a failure.

First of all don’t overdo the tan. There is nothing worse than an over the top ‘tandoori’ tan. If you are planning on hitting up the tanning booth go for the light shade for a natural glow, or just keep it classic and go el-natural.

A day at the races is all about style and originality. When getting frocked up for the Autumn racing carnival, keeping warm is just as important as looking great. This year’s trends include tights, opaque stockings, structured jackets and leather gloves. If you have the confidence and the figure, another fantastic and elegant look is to go for a pants suit.

When it comes prints, this season its all about the animal print. However, beware, it is very common for animal prints to be used in a tacky way. If you are going to opt for this trend, make sure it is done in a classy way and accessorise well. Choose a subtle print dress and pair it with a structured crop jacket or a pair of leather gloves to keep that classic look.

The TV show ‘Mad Men’ has been a huge inspiration this season with 50’s style dresses making a comeback. Longer hemlines and sleeved dresses, whether it be a capped, short, three quarter or long sleeve are a great choice for the races. Keeping it elegant but still stylish and on trend.

Headwear is the icing on the cake of every racing outfit. If you get the headwear wrong it can throw off your whole look. Fascinators are slowly fading out and hats and hatinators are in abundance. Go for something bold this season, but remember to tone down the accessorising to make sure you don’t over-do it.

When it comes to shoes for the day, you just can’t loose with a pair of patent or leather closed toe pumps or wedges, which are ideals for a muddy terrain. Ankle boots are also a great way to make a statement.

Grooming is also a huge part in pulling off your overall look. Whether you have an up-do or you’re leaving your hair down, it’s always important to keep it classic and neat.

For the men gearing up for the races, you just can’t loose with a beautifully tailored suit and a sharp tie. Bow ties are also a classic trend that are making a comeback at the moment. And don’t be afraid to try a hat, they are certainly making a comeback in the men’s race wear scene.

If you missed out on attending the 2011 Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup on Monday, be sure to get along to the next racing event, the 2011 Schweppes Oaks Day, Saturday 26th March.

If you are thinking of heading along to an event this Autumn racing season, be sure to check out the South Australian Jockey Club website www.sajc.com.au/home, for more details and the full racing event calendar.

This season’s racing fashions are all about style and originality, appropriateness and overall, knowing what works for you, so don’t forget to use these tips to put together a winning look on the day.
