As well as the President’s Award for Delectaballs, Black Squid also won gold and silver in Branding and Packaging for their fresh and exciting new designs.

Director of Black Squid, Derek Butler, was thrilled to receive the top award from DIA President Brendon Harslett, “It is an honour to receive the President’s award in such an esteemed, multi-discipline competition. I am a strong supporter of the DIA as it is an organisation of professional designers representing all disciplines of design”

Delectaballs is one of the latest food trucks to enter the scene as the popularity of the food-on-
wheels industry escalates.

“We designed the Delectaballs brand to be a fluid identity, by creating irreverent whimsical illustrations that can be applied to any media in any form reflection of the philosophy of a food truck visiting various locations with an ever changing menu of different types of balls” said Derek.

North Adelaide based Black Squid’s vision and design are based around contemporary ideas to make their clients stand out from the crowd.

“The brief was to create a fresh and exciting visual look and brand for a food truck. A cheeky and playful name, ‘Delectaballs’ was given to the truck. An unabashedly fun, quirky and irreverent visual style was applied to the truck, business cards and website. The truck manages to stand out amongst its peers, while looking ‘delectable’! Our design is contemporary, new, current, cost effective and quirky” he said.

The cheeky design for Delectaballs reflects Black Squid’s obvious flair for creating new flavours in the detail; and with a gold and silver in the Branding and Packaging for Delectaballs and Brauer, Black Squid is leading the pack.

South Australian natural medicine company Brauer have reaped rewards from Black Squid’s revamp of their packaging experiencing in excess of 10% growth in the Baby & Child ranges since the introduction of the new packaging. Derek says his company are committed to continuing to pass on their success to their clients.

“We want to continue designing successful brand identity and packaging” he said.

The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) is Australia’s professional membership body for designers and design businesses representing all professional designers in Australia.
