Award-winning Kytons Bakery launches Christmas treats

SA’s Kytons Bakery celebrates its 85th anniversary with an award win and the launch of its Christmas treats!

As the festive season approaches, South Aussies are planning their Christmas feasts—placing orders for prawns and seafood, organising meat trays for the Christmas Day barbie, and visiting their local liquor store, stocking up on beer and wine for the family celebrations.

Award-winning bakery and cherished South Australian icon Kytons Bakery is getting into the festive spirit, not only celebrating its 85th anniversary buy offering a delightful array of traditional sweet treats for people to add to their Chrissy menu this year.

Owned and operated for the past 20 years by Sharon and Darren Sutton, this family-owned business is bringing their time-honoured recipes to the people of SA, focusing on introducing their festive delights, flavours and Christmas hampers to a younger generation.

‘Christmas is such a busy time of year, especially if you’re hosting’, says Sharon. ‘We want to save people the time and work at Christmas and give them easy access to festive desserts made with quality ingredients that actually can pass as homemade.’

Some of the deliciousness that’s on offer this year at Kytons—besides their popular fluffy and chocolatey lamingtons—include mince pies, Christmas cookies, and their renowned, award-winning Christmas pudding that’s scooped up two national awards in two days across two states this year!

Christmas pudding and mince pies are steeped in festive tradition, and Sharon is always excited when younger Kytons fans give them a try.

‘We had lots of the younger generations trying a sample at the Royal Show this year—and many of them were delighted with what they tasted!’, says Sharon. ‘Our mince pies are made with buttery shortbread pastry, and both of our puddings are moist, decadent and delicious. The aged brandy pudding has a touch more brandy and a little more fruit and then is left to mature for six months—allowing the flavours and aromas to intensify.’

‘Our Aged Brandy Pudding has won a silver medal this year at the Sydney Royal Professional Bakery Competition, and our Traditional Christmas Pudding picked up top honours, winning 1st prize at the Professional National Plum Pudding Competition in Victoria too’, says Sharon. ‘Both of these competitions are open to all bakeries across Australia, and the Kytons team were pretty excited about the awards.’

‘The wins are a testament to the quality of Australian fruit we use, the time-honoured recipes of our puddings and the care and years of experience that go into baking all of our products’, says Sharon.

Awards for puddings are not the only accolades Kytons has received this year. Kytons was recently awarded the Consumer Award at the South Australian Premier’s Food and Beverage Awards. A public vote decides this award, so Sharon says this is the sweetest win of all.

‘To be recognised by the SA public for such a coveted award was the highlight of our 85th year. We took the whole team to the awards, so they all got to be part of the win—a great team-building moment and reward for their hard work too’, says Sharon.

Besides their traditional festive offerings, Kytons also have various gifts and hampers, perfect for business and corporate staff gift giving, and a fun and interactive DIY Santa Choc Chip House Kit, as a great way to get the kids involved this holiday season.

‘We put together a lot of customised hampers, but we also get a lot of businesses ordering mass amounts of one product, like puddings or packs of mince pies, so that they can add and create their own hampers for staff’, says Sharon.

Since Sharon and Darren took over the bakery back in 2003, Kytons has expanded from being more than just a community fundraising bakery, diversifying to wholesalers and 200 plus stockists across SA, including Drakes, Foodland, IGAs, Woolworths, National Pharmacies, Tony & Marks and various gourmet fruit and veg stores.

‘We also have a retail space here in Edwardstown that’s open from 9 am to 2 pm weekdays, and online ordering is available, too’, says Sharon. ‘Everything is baked on-site, and we love to see people come by, taking time out of their day to stop for a quick lunch or grab some treats to take home to the family.’
