Award-winning Local Filmmaker Produces First Feature

Local filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay is taking the plunge with her first feature, a queer vampire horror.

Adelaide-based filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay is currently working on her debut feature film So Vam. The film stars internationally recognised drag queen/performer BenDeLaCreme, local drag artist Xai, and Melbourne-based actor and social media influencer Grace Hyland. It is currently in post production.

Last year Mackay directed, co wrote and co-produced the award winning queer-horror short Tooth 4 Tooth. The film secured worldwide distribution.

In 2018 Mackay acquired the rights to adapt a Stephen King short story, A Tale of the Laundry Game. The sixteen minute short was accepted into the 2019 Monsterfest and was also accepted as a finalist in the Lift Off Festival, the International 13 Horror Fest, and The Best Shorts Competition, where it received a special mention.

So Vam tells the story of Kurt, an outcast in a conservative town who dreams of moving to the city to be a famous drag queen. When he is kidnapped by a predatory old vampire and killed, he is rescued just in time to be resurrected by a gang of rebellious vampires who feed on bigots and abusers. As a vampire he finally knows empowerment and belonging, but his killer is still out there: enslaving new minions with their own rotten hatred and threatening all that he loves. Until Kurt faces the monster, he will never truly be free, but this time he need not face it alone.

So Vam is co-written by Ben.P Robinson with cinematography by Aaron Schuppan.

The feature is currently in post-production.
