Carclew is offering local musicians and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to work closely with some of Australia’s leading Hip Hop artists to explore music production, lyric writing and live performance.
Back to Basics is a suite of master classes, one-on-one artist meetings and a public talk with some of our most respected Hip Hop and spoken word artists.
Running during May, Back to Basics is curated and hosted by South Australian Hip Hop artist Jimblah, with a lineup of artists featuring Solo of Horrorshow (NSW), Jane Tyrrell ofThe Herd (VIC), Omar Musa (ACT) and Candice Monique (VIC).
“Hip Hop is an important voice for our communities. Back to Basics is for the artists, beatmakers and rappers, producers and poets, recording artists, small room producers and music fans,” said Gordon Andersen, Carclew’s Back to Basics Project Coordinator.
The public talk, Saturday 24 May at Carclew, will feature all five artists and provide discussion around artistry and lyricism with a focus on making a positive change through Hip Hop music culture.
Up to nine local acts will be selected to attend one-on-one sessions on Saturday 24 May with Jane Tyrrell, Solo, Omar Musa or Jimblah. This is a unique opportunity for artists to ask the hard questions, seek advice and potentially problem solve with the experts.
Jimblah, Jane Tyrrell and Omar Musa are also running two exclusive masterclasses on 25 and 26 May, completing this advanced hands-on program.
“With the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry and specifically Australian Hip Hop, it’s easy to lose focus of what’s important,” said Jimblah, Back to Basics’ Curator.
“I’ve programmed an inspiring group of artists to talk about their own experiences with Hip Hop music and I’m looking forward to bringing this to the next generation.”
Applications and registrations are now open.
“All Back to Basics events are free and places are limited, but we’re encouraging artists at all stages of their career to take advantage of this exclusive opportunity,” said Gordon.
