Barossa Boy comes of age at Tasting Australia’s exciting new ‘Masters Apprentices’ event

The new generation of the Barossa Valley’s rich winemaking and foodie community will share some of the lessons they learnt while shadowing their influential ‘Masters’ at an innovative new event, Masters Apprentices, on this year’s Tasting Australia menu.

The new generation of the Barossa Valley’s rich winemaking and foodie community will share some of the lessons they learnt while shadowing their influential ‘Masters’ at an innovative new event, Masters Apprentices, on this year’s Tasting Australia menu.

Headlining the ‘Masters Apprentices’ event on Sunday, May 2 2021 – which sees 10 young up-and-coming Barossa winemakers pairing their wines with the culinary creations of six of the region’s most exciting young chefs – is sixth generation winemaker and member of one of the area’s most iconic winemaking families, Trent Burge.

Now the chief winemaker of his new Barossa Boy range, Trent grew up in and on the Barossa soil, where he learnt the craft at his father Grant’s side and from the ground up, progressing from the inquisitive country boy to cellar hand and, eventually, winemaker.

Trent’s 2018 Young Wisdom Mataro will be matched with Braised cheek, sunchokes & hazelnutcreated by Musque Food and Wine chef, Matt Cartwright.

The five-course lunch at The Barossa Cellar offers a rare chance to taste the future of the Barossa’s wine and food while enjoying a glimpse into how today’s mentors fed as apprenticed on the knowledge and experience of their influential ‘Masters. They will also share the contemporary ideas they have brought to the winemaking process.

“In my case, I was always at my dad’s side, watching his every move, soaking up as much knowledge as I could,” Trent recalls.

“And while clearly the Barossa and wine has always been in my veins, brutal honesty requires me to reveal that it was only when my childhood dream of being a Test cricketer didn’t quite pan out that I turned to winemaking,” he adds, with a healthy hint of a wicked smile.
