Barossa Distilling Co, an award-winning South Australian distillery, has released a one of a kind Barrel Aged Shiraz Gin.
Reminiscent of a Fortified Tawny, with rich jammy flavours, overtones of stewed fruit, sultana and Christmas spices, this gin is incredibly rare with only 130 bottles made.
The Barossa region is renowned for its Shiraz grapes and fortified wines and this Barrel Aged Shiraz Gin truly embodies this rich history.
Barrel Aging Gin is something the distillery is very familiar with. When you select the right Gin and age it in the right barrel – the results can be outstanding – as they saw when their Barrel Aged Gin took out the Gin of the Year in the London Spirits Competition in 2020.
“Barrel Aged Shiraz Gin was something we just had to experiment with. It was the right Gin, but what was the right barrel? After some careful consideration, we ended up selecting a resized Bourbon Barrel, looking to harness some of those wonderful characteristics of American Oak.” says Barossa Distilling Co’s Director, Neil Bullock.
After filling, the barrel was tucked away in the Distillery and left to do its thing.
Nearly four years on, the distillery had an aged Shiraz Gin like no other, a real collector’s bottle. This gin is not a gin for mixing; you may have a long hard think before even adding ice!
It’s a sipper in your slippers, a winter wind down, and something to be savoured, with rich jammy flavours, overtones of stewed fruit, sultana and Christmas spices.
“We couldn’t be happier with the outcome of what started as a curious experiment, we
just wish we had the foresight to make more at the time!” says Neil.
To signify it’s rarity, each bottle of Barrel Aged Shiraz Gin is individually numbered and comes in a custom wooden box fire branded with Barossa Distilling Co.
