This week, the Barossa Valley is celebrating as the beloved Barossa Vintage Festival returns with huge parades, quirky scarecrows, lively competitions, bustling markets, and, naturally, a glorious spread of food and wine.
This year, there’s a huge lineup of events scattered all over the valley, each celebrating the region’s rich heritage. There’s truly something for everyone.

“Over the next five days, there are over ninety events, ranging from free community events through to some pretty fancy wine dinners and experiences across the region,” shared a spokesperson from the Barossa Vintage Festival team.
“Old favourites like Ziegenmarkt are happening in Tanunda on Thursday morning, which is an old world style market, where we auction off fresh produce. It’s a lot of fun.
“On Saturday, we’ve got the Vintage Festival Parade, which is the longest (that we’re aware of) parade in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ve got 60 floats that will travel from Nuriootpa to Tanunda Oval, so seven kilometres, it’s pretty impressive. In the parade itself, we’ve got over 1,000 people participating, and thousands line the main road between Nuri and Tanunda to watch it.”
Whether you’re a local bringing your ute and having a barbecue while enjoying the parade, or are keen to get down to the region and check it out, this is a great family activity to do on the public holiday.

There’s plenty more for families as well. Something that’s especially fun, and something you might spot while travelling through the region, is the scarecrows. These are a much-loved part of the Barossa Vintage Festival and something the community loves to get involved with.
“There are awards given out for the scarecrows; everyone gets involved right across the valley, creating the scarecrows. This year we’ve registered over 150 scarecrows, but there are also lots of people who don’t register as a part of the competition and just do it for fun.”
So if you’re heading out with the kids, keep your eyes peeled for the quirky scarecrows dotted across the valley, it’s the perfect chance for a game of I Spy along the way!

Aside from these hallmark events, heaps of local businesses will be highlighting the best of the Barossa throughout the festival. From Vietnamese pho cooking experiences at St Hallett Cellar Door and Nonna’s cooking classes at Lou’s By Horizon, to runs around the vines and The Great Vintage Picnic at the Lyndoch Village Green, there’s something for everyone to check out and enjoy.
The Barossa Vintage Festival is where the best of Barossa comes out to play. Over the week, it really is one giant toast to everything that makes the Barossa special.
