Barossa winemaker triumphs with Best Australian Red Wine Trophy at Mundus Vini in Germany

The biannual award show, draws entries from leading wine producers globally, making this recognition particularly significant for the Australian label.

Barossa Valley winemaker Schubert Estate has triumphed at the international Mundus Vini wine competition in Germany, securing the Best in Show trophy for Australian red wine with their 2021 ‘The Lone Goose’ Shiraz Viognier. This prestigious event, held biannually, draws entries from leading wine producers globally, making this recognition particularly significant for the Australian label.

In addition to the trophy, Schubert Estate was awarded a Grand Gold medal for the same 2021 The Lone Goose variant, while their 2021 Gosling Shiraz and 2020 Goose Yard Block Shiraz each took home gold medals. Adding to their success, sister winery Hare’s Chase, also located in the Barossa Valley, received gold medals for their 2022 Endurance Grenache and 2022 St. Melengall Cabernet Sauvignon.

This string of accolades at Mundus Vini is part of Schubert Estate’s sustained excellence on the international stage, having also claimed multiple awards at the Sakura Japan Women Wine Awards earlier.

Chief Winemaker and General Manager Matt Reynolds shared his reflections on the victory. “In our mind it’s only right that a classically proportioned Barossa Valley Shiraz is acclaimed Australia’s best red at an international wine competition such as this. These deeply coloured and richly flavoured wines have come to define the very best of Australian wine on the international stage, and consistently position the Barossa Valley as Australia’s pre-eminent wine region. We’re very proud to be flying the flag for Barossa Valley around the world,” he said.

Reynolds, who has been at the helm since 2019, credited a meticulous approach from vineyard to glass for the high quality of their wine. This involves significant investments in soil and vine health and a continued commitment to sustainability, recently underscored by their certification from Sustainable Wine Growing Australia.

Schubert Estate remains selective in its competition entries, focusing on benchmarks that affirm their high standards. “The international wine competition program is a busy space, and it’s tempting to jump at every opportunity that comes our way. However, our ambition is to make world class wine and that demands pitching ourselves against the best and to being judged by the best. We are extremely selective about the shows we enter and the wine writers we engage with, deferring to respected reviewers and long-standing wine competitions to benchmark our wines. Mundis Vini fits the bill here in every respect,” explained Reynolds.

The 2021 Lone Goose Shiraz Viognier has also been highly praised by Dave Brookes of Halliday Wine Companion, who rated the wine 95 points.

Visitors to the Barossa Valley can taste the award-winning wines at Schubert Estate’s wine room located on Roennfeldt Road. With a busy period approaching, including the AFL Gather Round, Easter, Barossa Vintage Festival, and ANZAC Day long weekends, the winery is anticipating a surge in visitors.

Reynolds shared, “We’re excited to showcase our portfolio of international award-winning Barossa Shiraz wines, and encourage visitors to contact us and make a tasting appointment. The Residence at Schubert Estate is also heavily booked on weekends through March and April, but we do have mid-week vacancies. Rated a perfect 5 stars on AirBnB, Google and Bookings.com, the 3 bedroom villa is a perfect location from which to explore the word famous Barossa Valley. More information can be found on our website www.schubertestate.com, or by emailing [email protected] or calling the Wine Room on 0423 054 086.”

Reynolds is particularly optimistic about the forthcoming vintages following the 2025 harvest, which, despite lower yields due to early frosts and ongoing low rainfall, benefitted from consistent warm and dry weather, providing ideal ripening conditions. “I am extremely pleased with the quality of wines we’re making this year which is showing all the hallmarks of a great Barossa Valley red wine vintage,” he remarked.

Schubert Estate was founded on a legacy of high-quality Shiraz production dating back to 1915 when the Schubert family first planted vineyards along Roennfeldt Road. Since then, the winery has dedicated itself to crafting premier ‘First Growth’ level wines, maintaining a strong link between their vineyard heritage and their winemaking future.
