Barossa winery awarded double gold at Japan wine awards

Barossa Valley winemaker Schubert Estate has received a Double Gold and Diamond Trophy Award at the 2024 Sakura Women’s Wine
Awards in Japan.

Schubert Estate, a prominent vineyard located in the Barossa Valley, has clinched both the Double Gold and Diamond Trophy Awards at the prestigious 2024 Sakura Women’s Wine Awards (SWWA) in Japan.

The accolade was awarded to the estate’s 2017 Lone Goose Shiraz Viognier, which not only secured these prestigious honours but also garnered acclaim for its ‘Grand Prix Pairing for Japanese Cuisine – Sukiyaki’, in a competition boasting 9 distinct food and wine pairing categories, highlighting a spectrum of classic Japanese culinary delights.

The rigorous evaluation process was undertaken by a judging panel, comprised exclusively of female wine specialists including sommeliers, winemakers, educators, journalists, and leading hospitality professionals, involved the meticulous assessment of over 4,000 submissions from 27 wine-producing nations.

Among the entries, only 324 wines were deemed ‘worthy’ of the Double Gold Award, a distinction representing less than 1% of all submissions. A select 61 wines from this elite group ascended to the coveted Diamond Trophy status, with Schubert Estate standing out as one of only seven Australian wineries and the solitary representative from the Barossa Valley to receive this prestigious accolade.

“This is a very special accolade for the Schubert Estate team. Receiving awards from respected international wine shows such as SWWA reflects our ambition to make world class ‘First Growth’ wines from our estate vineyards at Marananga on the Barossa Valley’s western ridge,” Schubert Estate General Manager and Chief Winemaker Matt Reynolds said. “The special Grand Prix Pairing award also sends a strong message that classically styled rich and bold Barossa Valley Shiraz continue to be valued by wine specialists for their compatibility with Japanese cuisine”

The SAKURA Japan Women’s Wine Awards is dedicated to recognising and honouring wines that complement Japanese food culture, fostering greater wine appreciation in Japan, and fostering advancement opportunities for women in the wine industry. Inaugurated in 2014, the awards are under the guidance of President Yumi Tanabe, a prominent figure in the Japanese wine community, renowned for her expertise and influence.

The triumph extended beyond their acclaimed 2017 Lone Goose Shiraz Viognier, with other offerings from the Schubert Estate portfolio also tasting success at the 2024 SWWA awards. Both the 2017 Gosling Shiraz and 2019 Hatchling Shiraz were honoured with Gold medals, while the 2016 Goose Yard Block Shiraz and 2020 Hatchling Shiraz secured Silver medals.

The Schubert Family, pioneers in winemaking, planted their first vineyards along Roennfeldt Road in the Barossa Valley back in 1915. Over the years, their Shiraz grapes garnered significant attention from neighbouring wineries, renowned for their exceptional quality and rich flavours.

Guided by Chief Winemaker Matt Reynolds, Schubert Estate wines are meticulously crafted. Each bottle encapsulates a harmonious relationship between the vineyard and artisanal craftsmanship.
