Barossa’s Z Wine Wins Triple Vintage Prize

Barossa Valley sisters Janelle and Kristen Zerk of boutique label Z Wine have taken out one of the most prestigious vertical tasting awards in the country, the ‘Wine of Provenance’ trophy.

Forget about the X factor – it’s all about the Z as Barossa Valley sisters Janelle and Kristen Zerk of boutique label Z Wine have taken out the ‘Wine of Provenance’ trophy for their 2006, 2008 and 2013 Julius Shiraz at the 2016 Cairns Wine Show.

160 years, 5 generations, one special patch of Shiraz. The Zerk family continue to make seriously good wine and the accolades go to prove it. The ‘Wine of Provenance’ acknowledges three vintages of the same wine, all from a single vineyard, seeking to recognise what can be expressed from the location and its unique flavour profile.

Julius is sourced from a small parcel of fruit in the family vineyard in Lyndoch. It’s named after Kristen’s son Keevan Julius, who is in turn from the late family patriarch, Julius Zerk. After successive stand out vintages, winemaker Janelle was excited to work with classic Barossan Shiraz grapes to produce the trio of wines. “I feel honoured with this recognition as it instills my passion and dedication to quality, not only to this vineyard but all the other brilliant vignerons I work with in this great region,” she said.

Expression of terroir and consistent style was well rewarded in this trio of wines. The nicely aged 2006 has been described as perfectly aged showing stewed plum and Christmas spice complexity with smooth coffee and dark chocolate finish. The 2008, rich and brooding with red fruits, star anise, cocoa and earthy characters, and the zippy 2013 classic rich Barossa characters of raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate with black pepper notes.

It is testament to this dynamic duo that they have produced wines that are approachable, sophisticated and eminently drinkable. To stand out with a wine variety that the Barossa has become so well known for is an achievement in itself, also recognised by the 5 Star Winery Rating from James Halliday. Women in wine are a rare breed; but the well-received Julius Shiraz just goes to show that sisters are really doing it for themselves.
