Adelaide Festival

Barrio – Adelaide Festival’s Free Late Night Club

Think you know every inch of Adelaide? Over 10 nights Barrio will confront every misconception you ever had about our city. Join collectors, merchants, eccentrics and provocateurs who will gather each night at an ever-changing mix of market place, bar, stage and dance floor.

The FREE late night music line-up features international and local performers and DJs from around the world including: St Vincent (US), MEN (US), Mo’ Horizons (GER), The Killgirls (AUS), Shaolin Afronauts (AUS) and Graveyard Train (AUS).

Every night will be different. We’ve searched high and low for unusual and obscure things and, yes, finally ferret racing comes to the Adelaide Festival.

Opening at 9.30pm, Barrio will be a place where festival-goers can mix with artists and entertainers as they wander through a shantytown inspired maze of themed bars, streetfood stalls and strange happenings.

With a capacity of 1,500 Barrio combines the chaos of Hawkers market meets Mexican cantina, serving up the sights and sounds of Argentinean BBQ and treats from south of the border.

For those in need of refreshment even the bars come loaded with their own individual style. Choose from cocktails at Crack-at-o-a, (part volcano, part bar) or if you are a fan of a warming Glühwein, Adelaide’s first Alpine Ski Bar providing warming drinks on the balmy summer nights. If these options don’t float your boat there is always the Dusty Boots Bourbon Bar, Candy Bar or Gringo’s Tequila Bar and a regular bar for those who fear change.

LATE NIGHT LINE-UP

Grammy award-winning Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri (US/PUERTO RICO) and, for the first time in Adelaide, New York band Sway Machinery (US), who draw inspiration from members of Arcade Fire and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs producing a mix of blues guitar, afro beat, funk rhythms, sizzling brass and, yes, Jewish cantor.

Sat 3 Mar • Nerd Night

Whatever happened to Scratch & Sniff stickers? Turn up and hang out with the slightly obsessive or less social amongst us. Think Comics, Barbie Dolls, Atari and Weird Science.

New Zealand’s leading hip-hop/soul artist Ladi6 (NZ) and Donny Benet (AUS), son of 70’s accordion disco legend Giacomelli Benét. Donny wants to be the most famous disco accordion/Jazz bassist of the 21st century and we reckon he is in with a shot.

Local legends Track Team (AUS) play their full set and The Raah Project (AUS) mess around with established concepts of jazz, electronica, hip hop, dance and soul music.

Sat 10 Mar • Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Come to the party that’s a shameless homage to modes of transport and a massive excuse to celebrate a certain John Candy movie. You will leave asking ‘is it ok for adults to play with toy cars?’

The Mexicali Mammas (AUS), Chiquita and Anamaria, combine their multiple artistic and musical talents and their overwhelming obsessions for all things vintage and Mexican. Followed by Abbie Cardwell & The Chicano Rockers and Max Savage & The False Idols.

St Vincent (US) presents a show that will be pure, luscious, packed with indelible hooklines and ingenious rhythm parts, not to mention debonair solos. Mikelangelo & the Tin Star featuring Saint Clare (AUS) is inspired by a love of 50’s and 60’s instrumental guitar music and Western cinema soundtracks. Even if you don’t ride high in the saddle this band will make you twist, swagger and crack a crooked gun-slinging smile.

It’s the end of the world and the end of Barrio. You better make the most of it…
