Be our guest! Australian production of Beauty and the Beast Musical to premiere in 2023

Beauty and the Beast asks Australia to put its service to the test with the announcement of the musical’s Australian premiere at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in June 2023.

Disney’s production of Beauty and the Beast asks Australia to put its service to the test with the announcement of the musical’s Australian premiere at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in June 2023.

Direct from the West End, this enchanting and timeless tale has been brought to life in a reimagined production boasting all the spectacle and grandeur audiences know and love.

Whether you are a self-proclaimed Disney adult, a small child or even someone who has excellent taste, Beauty and the Beast is recognised in the Disney cannon as one of the greats. It was even the first animated feature ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Beauty and the Beast has already had such an amazing history with the stage, opening on Broadway in April 1994 garnering nine Tony nominations and one win. It played for more than 13 years on Broadway (before closing in 2007) and remains to this day – 28 years after it opened – one of the top 10 longest running shows in Broadway history.

The 2017 live-action retelling of the animated classic starring Emma Watson – we still love you Emma -quickly became the highest-grossing live-action film musical of all time, a record beaten only by The Lion King live-action released in 2019.

Taking it back to the Australian production origins, Beauty and the Beast opened in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre in 1995 starring Rachel Beck in the role of Belle, a young Hugh Jackman as Gaston, and the late Bert Newton as Cogsworth. The production played for over two years across Melbourne and Sydney and won the 1996 ARIA Award for Best Australian Soundtrack/Cast/Show Release.

Members of the original creative team have reunited on this breathtaking musical, featuring all of the spellbinding songs of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice including Belle, Gaston, Human Again and Be Our Guest. Beauty and the Beast is a much-loved classic that will fill the hearts of a new generation.

There is no word yet on whether Belle and the Beast will be coming to Adelaide, but I don’t think any amount of distance will stop avid fans from going to see this production – including yours truly.
