Bec Hardy Wines: Only South Australian to feature in global Top 100 Wines List

Bec Hardy Wines placed 53rd on the Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines list for 2021 – 1 of only 5 Aussie wines to feature.

Bec Hardy Wines, a family-owned business based in the heart of McLaren Vale, has just been included in esteemed wine magazine Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines list for 2021.

The Bec Hardy 2019 Pertaringa ‘Lakeside’ Cabernet Sauvignon was the sole representative for South Australia, placing 53rd on the global list – one of only five Australian wines to be included.

The US-based ‘Wine Enthusiast’ magazine employs tasters all over the world to review upwards of 22,000 wines per year. The list comes out annually, covering classic regions like Napa and Bordeaux, as well as more uncharted locations, such as the Vayots Dzor province of Armenia, and the rapidly growing wine regions of Uruguay.

Scoring 92 points in judging, the Bec Hardy wine was described as a rose-coloured Cab that delivered in a “big way”.

“It opens with bright, lucid aromas of red berry, baking spice, tree bark and flowers,” the review stated.

“The tannins are well-integrated, soft yet present, gently tugging on the fruit, which gets a lift from the crunchy acidity. It’s a modern, medium-weight Aussie Cab that should be a weeknight staple.”

Founder and co-owner Bec Hardy comes from one of Australia’s oldest wine families, the Hardy’s. Bec is the sixth-generation member and first female vigneron of the pack. This recognition follows Bec Hardy Wines’ increasing efforts to break into the US market.

Bec Hardy Wines recently exported more than 133,500 bottles of Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon to be distributed nationally across the US – the majority of which was the ‘Lakeside’.

“Recognition from one of the world’s leading wine publications is immensely rewarding for the whole team, particularly as we’re the only South Aussie wine that made the list,” said Bec Hardy.

“We’ve only recently started exporting to the US so to have this acknowledgement so soon shows we’re doing something right.”

The four other Australian wines featured on the list were:

#8 | Chambers Rosewood Vineyards NV Muscat (Rutherglen) – 95 points

#25 | Stella Bella 2019 Chardonnay (Margaret River) – 94 points

#42 | Best’s 2018 Bin No 1 Shiraz (Great Western) – 93 points

#78 | Silkman 2018 Semillon (Hunter Valley) – 92 points
