Being a Role Model a Real Pleasure for Diamonds

The members of the Australian Netball Diamonds, articulate athletes at the top of their sport, are wonderful role models for young Australian women.

As a team they are arguably Australia’s most successful sporting team boasting 10 of the 13 world championship titles that have been contested since their inception in 1963 (including a tied first place in 1979).

The Diamonds live up to the high expectations that being role models places on them and, as they will find out tonight in Adelaide, sometimes being a role model can be a real pleasure.

Tonight the team will attend the traditional Adelaide Netball Test Match Dinner hosted by San Remo. The meal has been developed by celebrity chef Adam Swanson and designed in consultation with Diamonds’ nutritionist, Kerry Leech.

“San Remo and Netball Australia have been working together to help promote healthy lifestyles that incorporate a balanced diet and physical activity” said Michael Neale, Chief Marketing Officer at San Remo.

“For San Remo, this includes highlighting the importance of grain based foods, such as pasta, in a balanced diet.

“We generally point to the recommendations of the National Health and Medical Research Council.

“Most people don’t realise that the NHMRC recommends at least 4 serves of grain based foods every day.”

The Australian Netball Diamonds will play a Test Match against England on Sunday at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, with the game to be followed by a New Zealand Silver Ferns v South Africa fixture as part of the Holden Netball Quad Series.

“As you would expect, the Diamonds see this meal as part of their preparation for the game,” said Mr Neale.

“It’s a great example for all the people who play netball in Australia and their caregivers: we would love to see mums talking to their daughters about making smart food choices before every netball game they play, and we’d love them to consider pasta as an integral part of their food choices.”

Marne Fechner, Head of Commercial Operations at Netball Australia explained that this was one occasion the Diamonds really enjoy being role models.

“The team have loved this event from the first time it was held in 2008,” she said. “Pasta is an important and convenient food choice for the Diamonds; and to have Adam Swanson weave his magic through the pasta takes it to a new level for the girls.

“I am sure they go home inspired to try new things with their pasta after this dinner each year.”
