The much-loved Mintaro Maze has temporarily closed its gates, but don’t worry—it’ll be back soon with a fresh new look and a well-deserved makeover!
The Clare Valley’s Mintaro Maze is a favourite among thrill-seekers and explorers of all ages. It’s the perfect spot to lose yourself within the living hedges and discover all the hidden gems inside.
Consisting of over 800 conifers, the Mintaro Maze features fountains, twists, and turns that are sure to challenge even the most seasoned adventurer. You can have loads of fun with the range of giant-sized games made of local Mintaro slate.
Browse the quirky gifts in the maze gift shop where you can try your hand at puzzles and games. They also specialise in locally made aromatherapy products made in the natural therapy clinic next to the maze. Even enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea with some lunch or sweet treats.
Unfortunately, the fun will have to wait until April, as the maze is closing for renovations until the 12th. These renovations take place every year to make sure the maze stays in tip-top condition for years to come.
The Mintaro Maze was first planted by the Morris Family in 1995. Michael, Sharon, Jacinta and Tyson along with a group of friends hand planted the 800 Castlewelland Gold Conifers in Autumn thirty years ago.
The maze was watered for the first three years, the fourth year it wasn’t watered so the trees could start establishing independence. But as with any water-wise garden, the maze hasn’t been watered since the year 2000.
The maze opened to the public in October of that year. Since opening it has survived two droughts and even vandalism back in 2018. Today, the maze has lost a small percentage of its living conifers which have been replaced with slate walls and more recently a section of metal sheet artwork
If you’re planning to head to the Clare Valley when the weather gets colder, make sure to keep this place on your list. It’s a must-do!
