Beloved Sunny’s Shop set to reopen soon after devastating fire

Sunny’s Shop and Mr Chan at Rosemont Hall will reopen in the new year, after being destroyed by a devastating fire in 2021.

After the beloved Sunny’s Shop and Mr Chan at Rosemont Hall was destroyed by a devastating fire in 2021, it has been confirmed the Prospect Road business will be reopening.

A recent social media post by local member of parliament Lucy Hood has shed light on the return of this Prospect favourite.

Lucy took to Facebook alongside resilient owners Aaron and One Ratanatray to share the exciting news that the venue is ready to embark on a new chapter, and, despite the challenges posed by the fire, a fresh start is on the horizon.

“Hands up who can’t wait for Sunny’s Shop & Mr Chan to be back! After two long years, One, Aaron & Tamara are preparing to reopen their iconic Prospect Road business after a devastating fire destroyed it in 2021,” Lucy says.

“I got a sneak peak of the rebuild and was blown away by their efforts to faithfully recreate our beloved Prospect Road icon.”

“A soft launch of Sunny’s Shop menu is anticipated by the end of the year, with both dining spaces to officially open in the new year.”

“They’ve literally risen from the ashes – and I know our community is ready and waiting to support them 100%!”

“And can confirm the cheeseburger spring rolls are coming back!!”

The owners have strived to rebuild an exact replica of the former building brick by brick, and Lucy replied to a comment on her Facebook post saying “they’ve even found the same tiles for Sunny’s Shop in Thailand.”

Aaron opened authentic Asian fusion restaurant Sunny’s Shop in 2016 and, after its immediate success, the adjoining Rosemont Hall was opened the following year and incorporated the additional restaurant, Mr Chan, bringing Chinese and Thai under one roof.

Mr Chan was renowned for its fresh, uncomplicated, and delectable Cantonese takeaway options, adored for its distinctive dumplings and flavorful Kung Pao Chicken, and was a great spot for leisurely meal out with its relaxed setting.

In the early hours of September 16th 2021, firefighters were called to the Prospect Road food hall and were unable to save the heritage-listed building, leaving it completely gutted and forcing its closure for more than two years.

Built in 1924, the council deemed the fire-ravaged structure irreparable and needed to be knocked down, and locals expressed their solidarity by leaving flowers and cards at the scene.

Lucy’s post confirming the revival of the two eateries Sunny’s Shop and Mr Chan has received an outpouring of love and support from excited locals who are keen for the building to reopen.
